"We ought to plan the ideal of our city with an eye to four considerations. The first, as being the most indispensable, is health." - Aristotle, Politics (ca. 350 B.C.)

DESIGNING HEALTHIER LIFESTYLES

The AIA Los Angeles Chapter, with support from LA County Department of Public Health, RENEW LA and the Los Angeles Department of City Planning, will host a half-day symposium to highlight opportunities to design communities that promote greater physical activity and equitable access to healthier lifestyles.

The symposium will bring together architects, policy makers, planners, urban designers, developers and healthcare professionals to discuss innovative strategies to design projects that will help to prevent childhood obesity and chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers and asthma.

With the goal of creating healthier communities, we will examine the available resources, planning tools and public policies that are available to further optimize and shape. Additionally, we will share ideas for how architects and designers can expand their scope of professional services so that they can become experts in preventative care. Leading architects will also describe innovative design features that health professionals may have yet to document and consider.

BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS

With the objective of more closely bringing together design and health professionals to participate in an inspirational dialogue about emerging health advocacy opportunities, we hope to build support for the initiatives of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, RENEW LA and the Department of City Planning.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. How do we transform the health crisis into a great cornerstone for city planning and design?
  2. What opportunities presently exist to facilitate greater cross-collaboration between architects and health professionals?
  3. What are the tools, policies and resources available to promote and facilitate a healthier built environment?
  4. What are some recent design innovations that healthcare professionals may not currently be aware of, and thus, have not yet had the chance to optimize as an inherent metric to further research?
